Childcare is essential for many families, providing care and learning opportunities for children while parents work. The Australian government, through the Department of Education, is committed to making childcare more accessible and affordable for all families. The recent Childcare Subsidy Campaign brings exciting changes that positively impact families nationwide.

Increased Family Income Limit

One of the most significant changes is the increase in the family income limit to qualify for the Childcare Subsidy. Previously set at $356,756 per annum, it has increased to $530,000. This expansion ensures that more families will be eligible for the subsidy, helping alleviate childcare costs and financial burdens.

Enhanced Childcare Subsidy Rates

To further support families, the maximum amount of the Childcare Subsidy has increased from 85% to 90%. This boost in subsidy rates means that families will receive more financial assistance to cover their childcare expenses, making services more affordable and accessible.

Targeted Support for Lower-Income Families

Recognising the need for targeted assistance, families earning $80,000 or less will benefit from a Childcare Subsidy rate of 90%. This high support rate will greatly benefit low-income families, giving them the peace of mind that quality childcare is within reach and affordable.

Graduated Reduction for Higher-Income Families

Families earning over $80,000 will also see significant support through the Childcare Subsidy program. Starting from a subsidy rate of 90%, the subsidy will gradually reduce by 1% for every $5,000 of income earned above $80,000. This reduction perfectly balances the need for support while ensuring that higher-income families still receive some subsidy assistance. The sliding scale will reach 0% for families earning $530,000 or more.

Multiple Children? More Subsidy!

There is some additional good news for families earning below $362,408 with multiple children aged five or under in care. They can still receive a higher subsidy rate for one or more of their children. This provision recognises the additional financial challenges families face with multiple young children and aims to offer targeted support to lessen their childcare expenses.

Special Consideration for Indigenous Children

Acknowledging the importance of education and care for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children, the Childcare Subsidy Campaign ensures that these children receive at least 36 subsidised hours of early childhood education and care per fortnight. This provision applies regardless of their family’s activity level, emphasising the commitment to providing equal opportunities for every child.

Effective Dates and Implementation

The changes to the Family Assistance Law, which incorporates the increased subsidy rates, will come into effect on July 1, 2023. Families will start witnessing the positive impact of these updates from July 10, 2023.
