Here are some fun, budget-friendly activities to keep the children engaged during the school holiday break.

Nature Scavenger Hunt

During the cooler months, it’s tempting to seek out indoor activities. However, on a cool Autumn day, heading outside to explore with a purpose can be so exciting for preschoolers. Just don’t forget jackets and boots! Discuss and make predictions with the children about what they think they might see on the walk to make for an exciting scavenger hunt. Put these ideas into a list and take the list on the walk with mini clipboards and pencils. As you walk, children can tick off everything they see and collect anything that can be used for autumn art upon return.

Natural Material Construction

Collecting nature items can inspire creativity in many forms. Children may be inspired to execute their ideas by building and creating using various materials. Collecting boxes and recycled cards or paper and combining these with natural materials and glue can provide endless opportunities. Free play allows for open creativity; however, other activities may be more structured, such as Leaf Crown Making Activity

 Cinnamon Scented Autumn Play Dough

Making and using play dough allows children to be creative and imaginative and can be calming and therapeutic. In previous school holiday programs, I have incorporated natural items such as twigs and leaves on the play dough table to provide more creative opportunities. During the cooler months, warm the senses with this Cinnamon Play Dough Recipe.

Anzac Biscuits

Stirring, measuring, squeezing, and spreading are just some kitchen skills preschoolers can use to develop their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. This egg- and nut-free Anzac Biscuit Recipe uses oats, making crunchy and delicious biscuits that everyone will love!

Science experiment

Preschoolers love science investigations, and they do not need to be complicated. Science can inspire children to think about how the world works, promote problem-solving skills, and give them the confidence to ask questions. This ‘Magic Milk’ Science Activity is creative and fun!
